The Memoir of Dr. Matsumoto Zun
Kim Kang-Hyun

Abstract
When Matsumoto Zun (1832-1907) was 70 years old, he handed out his memoir ¡ºNanchu¡»to guests who came to his birthday party. After several years, his memoir was serially published in a newspaper. The following translation is based on the ¡ºMatsumoto Zun Ziden¡»edited by Heibon Publisher in 1970.
Matsumoto Zun is a pioneer of introducing Western medicine to Japan. He studied Western medicine from Pompe, a Dutch navy doctor, who had been sent to Nakasaki in 1857. He was the representative of the medical school and helped establish a hospital where students were able to study Western medicine. He became the superintendent-general of military medical corps and built a solid foundation for the Japanese military doctor system.
